Food-workwear laundering, storage and replacement: a buyer's brief

Originally published 2025-08-07 · Editorial revision 2026-10-17

Define the intended cleaning and garment-handling arrangements before ordering food-workplace uniforms. The fabric, closures, pockets, labels and decoration should be reviewed against that proposed use and care process. A clean-looking sample is not evidence that a garment is suitable for every food-production area or cleaning procedure.

Get the operating requirements from the site

Ask the responsible site team which areas and tasks the garment will cover, how uniforms are issued and collected, and which hygiene controls apply. Different roles can have different clothing needs. Record the actual requirements instead of using “food grade” as a complete garment specification.

Ask how laundering is arranged: on site, through a service provider or by another agreed route. Obtain the proposed care process and discuss it with the garment supplier. Keep washing, drying, finishing and any special treatment visible in the brief rather than approving only a generic care label.

Evaluate the garment after the agreed care process

  1. Record the sample version, fabric and component references.
  2. Measure the agreed points before care and photograph the closures, seams and branding.
  3. Apply the agreed evaluation process through the responsible provider or laboratory.
  4. Record dimensional changes, appearance and component condition using the same review method.
  5. Resolve discrepancies before linking the care proposal to the production specification.

Set the evaluation conditions and acceptance criteria for the actual project. This article does not prescribe a universal wash temperature, chemical treatment or acceptable shrinkage figure. Those choices need to fit the garment, the site's operating requirements and the care provider's process.

Plan inspection, repair and withdrawal

Ask the site team to define what happens when a garment has a loose component, damaged seam, persistent soiling or an identification problem. Record who decides whether it returns to use, is repaired or is withdrawn. Where a garment has a protective function, its care and withdrawal decisions must also address the relevant instructions and requirements.

Keep reusable uniforms separate from disposable items in the purchasing plan. Follow the applicable handling and disposal arrangements for each item and work area. Do not claim an ordinary reusable uniform has antimicrobial performance, sterilisation capability or a verified contamination-reduction outcome without supporting evidence.

What can Workwear Solutions review?

For a made-to-order uniform project, share the garment reference, intended tasks, site clothing requirements, care proposal, quantities and destination. We can discuss the material and construction proposal through OEM or ODM development. Suitability, evidence and commercial details require review for the specific order.
